Read the water meter
number before and after an
eight-hour interval when no
water is used.

the same, the home has a
leak and will need to be

Shower
Check faucets, drains, and
handles for leaks; walls for
moisture, water stains and
soft spots.

Stains on walls or flooring
indicate previous water
damage and are generally
symptoms of larger
problems that lie beneath.  
Run a few inches of water in
the base of the shower or
tub and let sit for half an
hour to check for leakage.  
Toilet
Flush the toilet to check for
leakage around the base.  
Check for slow drainage.  
Check for soft floors.

A toilet should be tight on its
base, and leakage around

Water Heater
Check fist four digits of serial
number (MMYY) to indicate
age of water heater.  Search
for rusted or corroded parts,
such as the ventilation shaft.
